WEEK 47

Aloha, mi familia y amigos,

Man.... not going to lie... Satan really is fighting me in this area. I still haven’t figured out how I can receive the best amount of success here but I’ll let you know when I find it. Life is hard. Everything isn’t given to us on a silver platter. We need to try and try and try again.

I mean there are many examples of great people who tried something and was great at it. BUT there are many more examples of GREATER people who at first didn´t succeed but kept on trying and trying until they did… like Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Alma, Amulek, and Jesus.

This week I learned a lot about the atonement of Jesus Christ. This week I tried and failed A LOT OF TIMES but I know at one point, God will give me the revelation I need so I can find the best way to help people. I have learned this week, especially from Elder Salazar. He’s helped recapture some of the attributes I have lost. Again, God puts people in your life for a reason! I have a true testimony of that.

We also went with the sisters to help them in their area...IT’S SO WEIRD having sisters in the district... I am so accustomed to go on exchanges but with the sisters, my good old companion just comes with me everywhere. I love that kid but the sisters are pure power... There’s a reason the sisters don’t need the priesthood! LOL!

Well, even though I made a lot of mistakes this week, there’s only one way to go and that is up. I am ready to make more mistakes but I am even more ready to do better… learning more and more of the LOVE of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Sorry... I am not sharing all of the miracles or great experiences. I just feel like I should tell you guys that even though we make mistakes, God is still ready to make us his servants.

WEEK 46

MY FAMILY!  HAPPPPY BIRTHDAAAAAAY!!!!!!!

I LITERALLY FORGOT! Not going to lie—Dad, Carlton, Josh and Jessica… Jessica, just lucky for me that your birthday is a little later but I totally forgot. Half way through this week, I don’t remember exactly what we were doing but I looked at my watch and realized, wait, it’s September and everything and then BAM—everyone’s BIRTHDAYS... and well... yeah. And now I’m here saying HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH!

So… as I said last week, it was a little loco and it’s been about the same this week. We’ve been all around here and there this whole week. My district is actually in another area and I have sisters in my district so when I want to verify their work and everything, me and my companion have to go together and stay with them. But when we do, we lose that time to work in our area…I guess that’s life.

But EVERYTHING IS GREAT!  Well… even if this week was hard… I swear that I’ve never been REJECTED SO MANY TIMES EVER like what happened this week! I feel bad for Elder Salazar because it’s been a little rough but at the same time, it was really weird... Because… EVERYTIME somebody rejected us, I was happy. I don’t know but maybe my mindset has changed so that’s good.

TODAY we had a sports day again! The zones from RIO BRAVO and REYNOSA went to the Mission offices and played a lot of sports and got a little wet, so when I get pictures of the activity I’ll send you some!

This last week, I spoke in Sacrament meeting about a lot of things but mainly I talked about MOMMY AND DADDY and what I have learned from you. Like I mentioned before, the Branch is kind of dead. This last Sunday we only had 40ish members but had 20ish investigators and converts come to church.... That just shows you that the members are not working and helping each other. So I’m really trying to make this branch a missionary branch but it’s going to take some work. But as I spoke about you and everything that we’ve gone through, we could just feel the spirit. A lot of the members were crying.

After the meeting, the members now want to support us so we’ll see what happens this week. But it’s all because of you guys. MY PARENTS ARE THE BOMB! You have been the greatest example and I love you guys sooo much! Thank you for everything that you have given me and how much you both have sacrificed for me! I LOVE YOU GUYS!

This Crazy Week!

WEEK 45

So the title of this email is:   THIS CRAZY WEEK!

Dear Family & Friends,

It was...CRAZY! Let me explain. So on Tuesday, I went to go drop off Elder Cox in Reynosa, expecting to just pick up my new companion and that’s it, right? But NOPE!  The assistants surprise me and tell me that I will be opening a new area, too!  So yeah, I got transferred as well.

Let me explain about my new companion... ELDER SALAZAR! He’s new to the mission, so he is 18 and from Durango, Mexico. HE IS SWEET! We are going to finish his training so fast! HE’S SO PREPARED! Every missionary that I have trained have been so prepared—it’s crazy! Good old Elder Salazar will be totally trained in no time! I am so excited.

But here’s the REAL crazy part. On Tuesday, they told me in the morning about me being transferred. So in the afternoon, when we got back at like 5:00 pm, we went to the appointments that we had set up. I gave all the references that I had gotten from people to the sisters in my district. Then me and my companion left that night!

Then Thursday, we went back to Reynosa to see our mission president, along with… ELDER PAUL B. PIEPER, our Area Seventy. We had a training with him, where he told us what we needed to do better and helped us by showing how we can do it. But what’s even crazier is that only 15 missionaries in the whole mission had the opportunity to talk with President Pieper one on one in an interview. President Regelado called me and told me that I was going to be one of the 15 people, as well as my good old friend Elder Cox. (He’s killing it as a trainer by the way with his newbie companion.) I am so grateful to have had the privilege to talk with a man called from God. I have learned so much this week!

This week because of my interviews that I needed to do as district leader, as well as the other meetings that happened this week, we didn’t have a lot of time to work in our area yet, which I feel bad for Elder Salazar. He hasn’t gotten the regular mission experience but he will learn and will be better than me.

But a miracle happened this week. I was praying for the knowledge on how I can have the success the mission needs in this area, and I felt impressed that I needed to change the mentality of the members and get them on our side. So the time that I had, I worked on gaining the confidence of all the leaders of the branch.  OH!  I’m still in Rio Bravo, just in another branch named Monte Real. When I was getting ready to come over here, people told me that the Branch President is crap and that members don’t want to work. But with the time that I’ve had with these people, I realized that it isn’t the members’ fault—it is the missionaries’ fault. They hadn’t gained their trust. And this week I haven’t gained the trust of the members 100% yet but the members brought people to church for us and are entrusting us to teach them and help them to baptize. So #miracle.

Oh, another thing… On Sunday, Elder Pieper assisted with our Rio Bravos conference that we had, so... that was crazy too!  SO YEAH! MY WEEK!

I LOVE YOU GUYS! The church is true and all we have to do is create the miracles!

This Week Was Awesome!!

WEEK 44

Dear mi familia y amigos,

This week was awesome!!  But I some unexpected news… My good old companion, Elder Cox, is leaving me already to go be a trainer in another area. And so I will again be… training. ALSO, for the first time in the last two years, we are going to have sister missionaries in Rio Bravo and they are in my district. YEAH! But nothing will change for me. I’m still training, still district leader, so it’s going to be fun. I have no idea yet who my new companion is so, I will tell you the next time!

But we were able to do a lot of things this week. So, like I mentioned to Dad in his email last week, I was invited to go to a big meeting with the Zone Leaders, which happened this week. We talked about the success of the mission and everything. It was really cool and I learned a lot. But it was actually pretty intense. The assistants (AP’s) show the results of the mission to everyone and they pretty much say "Good Job" to the zones that have baptized a lot and for the people that haven’t, they “planched” them why they haven’t had success and everything.

I realized in my mission that we all want success and are working together to make it happen. So we will strive to be the servants that God needs. We’ve lost a lot of missionaries these last two months so as a mission we are hurting a little bit, but we are thankfully getting the same results. At the meeting, I got the chance to talk to my good old father, ELDER MULLINS. He’s an AP now! We have 6 assistants in my mission, which is unusual. I also got to see my old MTC companion, Elder McGary.

AND the president is in LOVE with the ukulele. Anytime I am with him, he wants me to bring my ukulele! This weekend the general authority over our area will actually be visiting our mission and he wants us to SING for him with the ukulele.... so I will let you know how that goes.

Sadly, we didn’t have baptisms this last week. Because of the meeting, we lost a couple of days to work. Also, the investigators that we have right now are not progressing enough to be baptized. I will let you know what happens this next week.

WEEK 43

ALOHA family!  I LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!

So this week was full of absolute craziness. BUT I loved it! It was filled with following the Spirit, finding people who are going to progress, and… BAPTISMS!

Elder Cox and I knew that we were going to have a great week, even though we just lost a couple of baptisms. We chose to forget what happened and focused on finding the people who were ready now instead of losing time with people who Satan puts in our path to waste our time. We focused on the people who are ready to get baptized and that brings us to Diego.

Diego... he is a cool kid! He’s an intense kid but I am privileged to know him. I am so thankful to my Heavenly Father for putting him in our path. We met him the first time we came into this area but we felt he wasn’t going to progress really fast, so we wanted to take it slow with him, so we were just texting him, becoming friends. We left him with a pamphlet, and then one day he told us he read it and had a lot of questions. So we had him meet us at the chapel.

We showed him everything and we talked. We gave him the lesson and man, did I feel the Spirit. First, some background of this kid. He’s Islamic and believes in Alá which is another name for God and everything. Well, his religion is very complicated. But man, the Spirit was so strong. So we taught him the lesson and he told me, "I don’t believe it.” He believes in prophets but only in the prophet of his religion that died forever ago and came out with the Quran. (not going to lie...had no idea what he believed in...)

So I asked him to PRAY! We continued on with the lesson some more and everything but wanted him to pray. He fought against us and didn’t want to do anything of that sort but in the end, we won! He said the prayer AND that’s when we felt the Spirit so strong! We then started giving him more lessons. He came to church. (A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE WARD KNOWS HIM. They all doubted that he would get baptized.)

Then...well....he told us he didn’t believe any of it. And I knew… I don’t know how... but I knew he was lying. He was just scared. I knew he received a message from God but was just scared. So he started asking a lot of questions about the Book of Mormon and everything. What I pretty much did was tear every shred of his religion to part and showed him how true our church is by evidence, but I know with all my heart, not even by evidence gets people to believe. I then bore my testimony that all of what we said was true and told him to pray, so he did. He started and said, "Padre Celestial, I thank you for these missionaries that have been put in my path and I want an answer..." and then we sat there for about 5 minutes in silence. And then he ended the prayer, and he was like...."THAT WAS MY ANSWER?!?!” and the truth...he was still scared... but he wanted to get baptized and didn’t want anyone else there—just me and Elder Cox. It was awesome. BUT I EVEN HAVE A BIGGER STORY ABOUT HIS CONFIRMATION!!! Now that was crazy. Satan really didn’t want this kid to be a part of the Church....

And we are teaching English to Marisol, who is very Catholic but she loves us so I think she will listen to us and will get baptized soon.

This Week Awesome, A Little Sad, But Still Great!

WEEK 42

Dear mi familia y amigos,

I miss you guys! BUT the mission is better! This week was awesome, a little sad but still great! Let me explain everything that happened.

We had 8 people in the house this past week up until Thursday. The reason is because we just had changes because a WHOLE bunch of missionaries went home on Friday. In these next two months, we are going to be down so many missionaries. There will only be about 100 missionaries in the mission. That is crazy. But this week was a little different since three missionaries arrived on Thursday and stayed in the house until two missionaries went home. The Mission President in just this last week alone has come to our house three times. He is little obsessed with our area and my companion, Elder Cox, because well... HE’S HUGE… so he’s always stopping by which is cool and he knows our converts.

But because all of these things were happening, we couldn’t work the way we wanted to but we still had some success. In the zone, we had three baptisms. We have a lot more planned for the next week, so I will let you know how that goes.

But what was sad this week is that two of our baptisms fell through this week. We’ve been teaching a lady whose name is Lorena and her son. SHE IS SO COOL!  She contacted us in the park, and we talked with her, shared a little message, and set up an appointment to meet with her. AND IN EVERY LESSON, WE FELT THE SPIRIT SO STRONG. She was a nun many years ago, and so every lesson she asked us sooooo many questions. But the last time that we taught her officially, she ended the lesson with the prayer and asked God if all of this was true. After the prayer, she looked at us in the eyes and told us it is true. That she KNOWS it is true.

Well, her baptism was supposed to have been yesterday but what happened is that her husband doesn’t want them to change AT ALL. So when we went in the morning to go talk with her and her husband about everything, he told us that the son would not be baptized but that Lorena has the choice. BUT she doesn’t want to. So then we came back later to talk with them some more so that we could really understand their reasons why. They gave us reasons, a little bit of excuses and everything. We answered all of their doubts with just using the Bible and Lorena was crying. I looked her in the eyes and asked her again, “Do you believe these things to be true”, and she told us “Yes”. Then we invited her to be baptized again, and then she told us that how could she leave all that she has learned and believed her whole life to be true.... She started crying, and she didn’t even have to speak. I knew. She wasn’t going to change even though she’s had a clear sign and a clear answer.

After this, I’m not going to lie, my heart broke because I KNOW how many blessings she could receive and she denied them. But I know she will have the courage one day to change… Now, it’s time to go find the people who are ACTUALLY ready.

Many Miracles From God This Week!

WEEK 41

Hola, mi familia y amigos,

This week was awesome! We definitely have had many miracles from God this week!

We found a lot of people to teach, but I want to tell you about Claudia and Jesus who got baptized yesterday. On Friday, Claudia told us they were going to get baptized and then on Saturday, the whole day, we could not find them, so we were really worried. Then she called us and told us that they were not getting baptized. We were disappointed and got even more worried and everything.

So that night, I told Elder Cox that we needed to pray and figure out what was up with her, and so we prayed…for a long time...and we asked God what she needed so that she could get baptized. After the prayer, Elder Cox thought of a scripture. And we decided that we NEEDED to talk to her but we didn’t know how. The reason is because we teach her at her work and SHE LIVES IN NARNIA!! [For those of you unfamiliar with the “Chronicles of Narnia”, he means really far away] so we just left it in the Lord’s hands.

We woke up the next day, prayed for guidance, and then left the house. I thought that we should go and invite our other investigators to go to church and everything. So we went on our way, and as we walked, we passed by the work of Claudia. She wasn’t there, so we just kept on going to visit with our other investigators. We talked with them for a while and then we headed for the chapel. We started walking and then I felt prompted to pass by one more time to Claudia’s work, and SHE WAS THERE!

We started talking, and we really just sat her down and talked. She opened up and told us all of her problems and EVERYTHING! And then she said something and a thought came into my head. I knew God was with us. I started talking and used the scripture that my companion thought of last night. Everything just seemed to mend together, and well.... SHE GOT BAPTIZED! We answered all of her doubts and she trusted in the Lord and took the step of baptism with her son!

THIS STORY IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY MIRACLES that happened this week. This week we baptized FOUR people and each one has a story!

Also, the Mission President called us and congratulated us for the success we had and for the success we are having in our zone. We beat the record for the most baptisms in a week for a zone, which was 20!!! God has been blessing us a lot this week.
